The feast of the Baptism of the Lord

Another slight change at the Sunday Masses was the Renewal of Baptismal Promises. Just like the Asperges (see previous blog post) renewing our Baptismal Promises on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is for us a memorial of our own Baptism.

Also on Sunday afternoon was the weekly Holy Hour to pray for an increase in Priestly Vocations in our Diocese of Lancaster. Why not come along? Holy Hour is on Sunday’s at St Mary’s 2:30pm. (Please keep an eye on the weekly Newsletter in case of any changes).

This Sunday is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. At the beginning of Masses this weekend, water and salt are blessed and then the salt is added to the water.

Then the congregation are sprinkled with the Holy Water as a memorial of our Baptism. Now if you are wondering why this blog post is titled Asperges Me, it is because the hymn sung during the sprinkling is called Asperges Me. Here is the English translation:

Thou wilt sprinkle me, O Lord, with hyssop and I shall be cleansed
Thou wilt wash me, and I shall be washed whiter than snow.
Pity me, O God, according to Thy great mercy.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

From a traditional hymn for this great Solemnity:

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star

O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy Perfect Light
