The Novena prayer for Pentecost is being said after Mass each day this week. You can pray the Novena at home too! As the Solemnity of Pentecost approaches we pray that just as the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and Our Blessed Lady, the Holy Spirit may descend upon us and fill us with life anew.

During the month of May the Church in a special way honours Mary. This is done by singing various hymns to Mary, praying the Rosary, saying special prayers to Mary and also more traditionally by having a May crowning. What is a May crowning? In Eastern Churches crowning Mary was associated with adding ornamentation to an icon of Mary, sometimes as simple as adding additional gold trim Today, May crownings occur in many Roman Catholic parishes and homes with the crowning of a statue of Mary. The rite may consist of hymns, prayers, and an act of consecration to Our Lady.

The Lady Altar at St. Mary’s is decorated with flowers and the candles (known as the big six) are lit at all Sunday Masses throughout the month of May. The final hymn at Mass on Sunday was a traditional Marian hymn called ‘Bring flowers of the rarest’ Here are the words of the Chorus:

O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.
