Lourdes Pilgrimage 2017

Last Friday a few parishioners joined other pilgrims from our Diocese of Lancaster on the Lourdes Pilgrimage.

Some facts about Lourdes:

  • The most visited pilgrimage shrine in the Christian world, Lourdes is not an ancient site but of more recent development. Lourdes is the site of a Marian apparition in 1858.
  • The pilgrimage season at Lourdes lasts from April through October, with the main day being August 15, the Marian Feast of Assumption.
  • Four to six million pilgrims from around the world visit the shrine each year and it is estimated that more than 200 million pilgrims have come to Lourdes since 1860.

Some history about Lourdes:

  • The origins of its sanctity begin with the fourteen-year old girl Bernadette Soubirous.
  • Between February and July of 1858, Bernadette saw apparitions of a white-robed lady 18 times in a small grotto called Massabiele, near the town of Lourdes.
  • In the apparitions Bernadette was told to instruct the village priest to build a chapel in the grotto, which many people would soon come to visit.

School Masses

Masses with our Parish School family were celebrated this morning as the academic year comes to an end.

The First Mass was at St Mary’s Church and then later on in the morning at St Patrick’s School.

Both Masses were Votive Masses of The Holy Spirit – hence the red vestments worn by the Priest.

We also remember in our prayers those who will be moving from Primary School to Secondary School in September. Enjoy the summer holidays!!

Priestly Ordination!

A very special moment in the life of our Diocese of Lancaster and indeed the Universal Catholic Church – the Ordination of a Priest! Our very good wishes and prayers go to Fr Daniel Etienne who was Ordained to the Sacred Priesthood!

The Ordination Rite itself has several parts to it:
Calling of the Candidate
Presentation of the Candidate
Election by the Bishop and consent of the people
The Homily

Examination of the Candidate
Promise of Obedience
Invitation to Prayer
The Litany of the Saints – during this part the candidate prostrates himself as a sign of his self-giving and dependance upon Almighty God.

Meanwhile, the Church, in communion with the Saints, prays for him. Then follows:
The Laying on of Hands
The Prayer of Consecration

Investiture with Stole and Chasuble – The newly ordained is clothed with the sacred vestments worn by the priest for the celebration of Mass.

Above is Fr Daniel Etienne’s Ordination Vestment.

And finally, the Anointing of Hands, Presentation of the Gifts and Kiss of Peace.

After Mass Fr Etienne gave his first blessings.
Congratulations Fr Etienne! Ad multos annos!
