CAFOD Fast Day

A few weeks ago it was CAFOD Harvest Fast day – we as a Parish held a Soup Day to help raise funds for CAFOD.

The total collected for Harvest Fast Day was £3,370,70. This includes the £632.70 from the enjoyable Soup Day at St Patrick’s. Thank you to all who helped with this great effort!

Parish Choir – come and join us!

The Parish Choir meet every Thursday at 2:30pm (during Autumn and Winter) in
St Mary’s Church organ loft. We are always on the look out for new members… Male and Female!

“He who sings,” said St. Augustine, “prays twice.” The holy Bishop of Hippo meant that singing adds to our praise and worship of God – that our voices are gifts, with which we can make music to the Lord.

I will sing to the Lord, glorious His triumph!

Blessed John Henry Newman

On Monday we celebrated our Patronal Feast – Blessed John Henry Newman.

Born in London in 1801, he was for over twenty years an Anglican clergyman and Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford. His studies of the early Church led him progressively towards Catholicism, and in 1845 he embraced “the one true fold of the Redeemer.”

In 1847 he was ordained priest and went on to found the Oratory of St Philip Neri in England. (We had a Parish Trip there two months ago!) He was a prolific and influential writer on a variety of subjects.

In 1879 he was created Cardinal by Pope Leo XXIII. Praised for his humility, unstinting care of souls and contributions to the intellectual life of the Church, he died in Birmingham on 11th August 1890.

Blessed John Henry Newman – Pray for us!

Baby Loss Memorial Week

During Baby Loss Memorial week 9th – 15th Oct and to mark its 50th anniversary, LIFE is encouraging churches throughout the country to provide an area where anyone can come to sit quietly to remember the all too brief lives of babies who did not live to birth or beyond infancy.

Such a space will be provided here at St Mary’s throughout that week and a warm welcome is extended to anyone who would like to come along.
